Forum Terms & Rules
Before you register, please read the below to make sure your registration is successful.
Allowed E-Mail Addresses.
Unfortunately, due to a recent surge in spam-bot traffic, we have placed restrictions on which email services can be used to register on Yoshi Lore. Some of these services are below:
- Google GMail
- AOL Mail
- E-Mail.com
- All e-mails ending with .ru, .pl, .info, .cn
- All e-mail addresses with specific words or terms in them
- Yeah.net
- SelfIP.com
The bulk of our spam bots register using Google GMail, so until Google sort out their anti-bot registration we won't be accepting members with GMail addresses. You can however use a private service, or Microsoft Hotmail as it seems Microsoft have implemented suitable measures to prevent bot registrations (for now).
Age Restrictions
To comply with COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act - More information
here), we are refusing registrations to all under the age of 14 rather than requesting parents give written consent to register for the safety of personal information of our staff. This also protects you as you don't have to give your information out either!
If we find that a member has registered using a false age/D.O.B, we will exercise our right to destroy all information held on the member in breach of our rules which includes the users ability to log in, all data in their user profile, and blog if one was made. However, posts and threads created are required for continuity of discussion and will instead be anonymised by the removal of username/display name from the post, unless posts contain personal information, which will instead be truncated or post/thread destroyed completely.
Your data, and what you post
When a member registers at a board, such as this one, they give away information about themselves. The name they are identified by online, passwords, date of birth/age, personal email address. And those are at minimum! We have user profiles, in which users can submit a myriad of information about themselves. It is important to note that by filling in personal information when creating your profile, you therefore allow us the right to display this information in your user profile. You can revoke any of this information just by going in to your settings, and deleting the information you no longer want visible. If you reach a point where you want to leave the community, just send a private message to any staff member in the group (shown in their profile) "Forums Admin". Staff in other groups cannot help you out here as they don't have the ability to modify or destroy your membership. Destroying your membership destroys all content in your profile and blogs you may have. This also will cause your posts/threads to become anonymised, but if you would like these removed also, then be sure to tell us!
The security of your data
Your data as far as our backend is concerned, is safe. Your password is stored in an irreversible cypher, so not even we know what your password is, and we can't get it back for you either! You can only reset it through the "Forgotten your password" utility on our log on page. On the subject of passwords, the security of your data relies on the password you chose to use to secure your profile. It is highly advised that passwords contain letters, numbers and symbols in varying cases (for example 3V3]Es7_Ul71m@73). Difficult to remember, unfortunately so, but with incredible compute power becomming more and more accessible, it's causing more and more passwords to be simply guessed using brute force methods. All letters or all numbers is a surefire way of getting your account hijacked. They can be incredibly easily guessed, so the security of your account is a two-way deal. We will implement technologies that will protect your informaion, but you also have to choose your password wisely. Using a weak password will get your profile hijacked and if someone uses it for nefarious purposes, banned!
Also, by using the internet, you leave traces of your presence on all servers you connect to. By simply visiting a site, such as Google, Bing, Facebook, Hotmail or Amazon, you leave a log of your IP address (A unique number that can trace activity to a specific computer on the internet, depending on your service provider, this changes if you get disconnected and reconnect), which page you visited, and at what date and time. Sometimes, your browser and Windows version is also logged depending on how much information your browser sends to the service. This won't identify YOU however, but it can be used by us to report harassment or if required to disclose by law. After registering, information you provide to us is optional. You provide it because
you decided to. If we find you post or make available to the public your address or telephone numbers, or any other information that can be used to personally identify you, we will delete them (Trust us, you don't want that kind of attention!). Also, we hate advertising, which is why you don't see any. As a part of this, we don't share any of your information with third parties for marketing purposes or similar. Nowhere on this site will you find a confusing tick box which decides as to whether we can or cannot share your data. It's never shared.
However, if we find you are a bot or a spammer, then we are obliged to share data (Only basic data such as display name/username, IP addresses involved, and the email address of the offender) with spam agencies to help other communities like ours be safe from your misdeeds. This service we use is called the Invision Power Services Spam Monitoring Service. This protects our community from most spam and it evaluates your basic information to tell if you are a known spammer or not. This is set to be strict, so if you are a "Possible Spammer", it means a community elsewhere flagged you up as a spammer. This board is set up to require administrator validation if you have such a flag. If you are "likely spam", again, an administrator must review your registration. If the Spam Monitoring Service says you're a known spammer though, then you will be banned on registration.
And finally...
If you've come this far and have an email account that doesn't fall in to the above list, and you're over the age of 13, welcome to the Yoshi Lore community.
